Delayed White Christmas!

Yesterday we had planned to come and email families, and President Nilsen.  However giant snow flakes started falling from the sky Boxing Day Morning!  Quickly the snow stuck and turned into about 10 inches of Snow!  We got a notice from the mission office, telling us not to use the cars today.

Elder Clay and I looked at each other, and sighed.  All of our plans were down in Dayton.  We were stuck in Huber Heights!  Some of the public transportation was down, so that wasn't even an option.  We just gritted our teeth, and started making the walk around Huber Heights.  We first came to the library, only to find out it was closed! Then up to Victoria's (the restaurant) to do service for it to be, closed.  Already tired, we took refuge in a near-by McDonalds, grabbed a McDouble, and went on our way again!

We did a lot of service as we walked.  Helping people shovel their driveways, and helping guys in their cool sports cars back up!  We did a lot of hiking in the snow, uphill, both ways, but we did get to help quite a few people.

The real troopers yesterday were the mail-men.  Yesterday afternoon I received my flight itinerary.  That is one of those papers I never thought I'd get.  You were asking about my flight from Minneapolis to SLC.  I think Delta overbooked the flight, and since it wouldn't  effect the time I arrived to STG.  I was the one that got moved.  In fact I was talking to Elder Unzaga an English Elder in Huber Heights, he still has people in our transfer group on his flight itinerary.  So I think I'm the lone man!  Elder Clay accuses me of being trunky I probably am...  I'll just keep pushing until my ministerial certificate expires!

Much Love!

I totally spaced two things...  So in Mexico.  They basically have two Christmas's.  La Navidad, and the Dia de los Reyes (day of the Kings).  El Dia de los Reyes, is to celebrate the 3 wise-men and their arrival to the Savior.  It is celebrated on the 5th of January shoes are set out, and toys are placed inside by the traveling kings.  To entice the Magi into coming sweets are left out for them, and hay for the camels.  The next morning the presents of the Magi are unwrapped!  The fun part of the holiday is eating the Rosca de Reyes. It is a typical Spanish cake. (in other words not very sweet) however inside are little dolls.  When cutting the Rosca if you get a piece with a doll in it you are awarded good fortune for the year!  As well you are on the commitee for a party that will happen at a later time, and you'll have to make tamales for the party!

This holiday is one of my favorites in the Spanish Culture.  It's a low key Christmas, and I think it will work for our holiday when I come back!  I think it's funny that it falls on these days.  I'll try and hunt down a reciepe for the Rosca if you'd like.  I'm sure Candelaria would know how to make it, or get a hold of one.  Just let me know if this is something you'd all like to do!

Also... I need to get my books taken care of.  Do you know how to check on what books I need?  If not I can come home and get that taken care of.  It's nothing too serious.

Much love Mom, have a good week!

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

We've yet to see snow here in the Ohio.  These past couple of days it’s been around 60 degrees.  So it's not a white Christmas thus far!

This past week Elder Clay and I definitely saw the Lord's hand in the work!  Last Tuesday we were able to see Marcela, and also her husband Craig.  The first lesson was more directed to Marcela.  We taught her the message of the Restoration of the Gospel.  As we taught about prophets and their roles, she was right on board.  We moved to the Savior's ministry, followed by the Apostasy.  When we hit this point Marcela got an extremely scared look on her face and asked, "What happened to the Priesthood authority?"  When a person asks that question, you know that they are seekers of the truth!  We quickly referred to the story of the first vision; from there she soaked in everything like a sponge!  Not to mention Sister Galvan was there in the lesson.  She was able to testify to her friend of the truthfulness of the Gospel.  By the end both of them were in tears and hugging!

This first lesson was all in Spanish.  Her husband Craig came in and out, but never really participated.  Craig speaks only a bit of Spanish.

Our next lesson we taught Marcela the Plan of Salvation.  The Spirit filled the room.  The lesson was near as intense as the first, but as the progression of man and his spirit was outlined, solace filled her heart.  Life's questions were answered in this lesson.

Craig chimed in at the end.  He has some doubts of what we shared.  Common Doubts.  Elder Clay then testified of the Book of Mormon, and the Prophet Joseph Smith.  Craig will prove to be the harder head, but he still has great promise!

We woke up Sunday Morning to make Marcela, Craig, and kids breakfast to make sure they were coming to church.  While at church Marcela told members of the Relief Society how she had a person confront her about meeting with "Los Mormones".  Marcela testified to her about what she has learned, and how she already believes that Joseph Smith is a prophet!

Elder Clay and I are excited for this family.  We could see them being baptized very soon.  We hope to be able to fire the question this week!

At this point this mission is on track for 501 baptisms in the year of 2012!  That is if all the people that are on date now get baptized.  We are so close!  The excitement is building!

Almost out of time....

I love you all!  Just don't drink too much Egg Nog!

'Tis the Season

It's been a long time right?  Can barely believe I'm back on the computer!

We've had a tender mercy this last week.  One of our members Sister Galvan invited one of her friends to the Branch Christmas Party!  Her name is Maricela.  The crazy thing is that she has already been to church and talked with missionaries before!  Sister Galvan simply wanted us to go meet her and hand off a copy of Joy to the World.  We did so, and as we did Maricela asked if we could come to her house teach her more!  Elder Clay and I were caught completely off-guard!  We got her information, and set up an appointment for tonight!  Elder Clay and I are excited for this lesson to come!

Yesterday was our Mission Christmas Devotional.  Shawn Bradley came once again.  He told a story from when he was a missionary.  He was serving in the Sydney Australia Mission.  He and his companion wanted to baptize one more person before Elder Bradley went home (he had 4 weeks).  They work, and found a lady named Teresa.  She went to church and kept all of the commitments!  Up until tithing.  She was a single mother, and having a hard time keeping afloat.  She couldn't understand why God would take her money when she was in a time of financial crisis.  Elder Bradley and his companion fasted and prayed for her.  Later one of the members who was a friend to Teresa, called the missionaries.  She told them that something was wrong with Teresa's ankle and she wanted a Priesthood Blessing.  Elder Bradley and companion scurried over to her house and gave her the blessing.  Elder Bradley didn't think much of the blessing at this time, however once they got home there was a message on the answering machine from Teresa.  The message was, that while Elder Bradley was giving the Blessing her ankle was healed!  She didn't know how to say it then, but she knew she needed to be baptized!  She was, and so was her boyfriend!

Simply, Elder Clay and I hope the same thing happens here in Dayton Spanish! :D

Mom, you asked about how my final days in the mission will be.  So I'll tell you!  The transfer meeting is on Thursday.  The Transfer Meeting is at 11:00 a.m. The transfer will be announced.  Elder Clay will get a new companion, we'll sing the mission song, and I'll give my departing testimony to the missionaries, and the members that brought the missionaries.

Quickly after there will be a mad scramble as people say good-byes grab their stuff, take pictures, and head off to their new areas.  Departing missionaries will stay.  The chapel we meet at is on the same lot as the temple.  Departing Missionaries will go to the 1:00 p.m. temple session.  After-which the assistants will take all 20 of us to the mission-home (we have huge transfer group).  President will grill us with our departing interview.  We'll stay the night at the mission home in Powell.  No party at the Harley....  The assistants President and Sister Nilsen will take us to the airport and give us the boot.  Simple as that!

Also with my bike i plan on leaving it in the Mission for another missionary to use.  With the amount of wrecks I've had, and the price for shipping it home, it just doesn't seem worth the pain of getting it home and getting it worked on.  I'll let Abram (my good ol' Trek) stay in Ohio for another two years!

Time is running out.  Remember, I love you all!

So, you all are probably wondering why P-day is Thursday.  Right?

Well today was the Dayton East Temple day!  Elder Clay and I were able to go through the temple with our zone.  The temple is pretty small so to come and do a session you need to make a reservation in advance.

Going with the Zone we thought our names would be on the list, because the mission makes the reservation for us now.  (Before, we would arrange it ourselves every quarter of the year.  Now we have predetermined days when we go with our zone).  Elder Clay and I walk in, and we aren't on the list! There were already 20 some-odd missionaries not to mention their rides to the temple.  So it was already looking to be a full session.  We were cast aside to see if there would be room for us in the session.  Once we were told that there was space, we were thrown into a separate locker room.  The baptismal font locker room.  Away from all of the other missionaries and temple patrons.  I see a trend here...

However it was great to be at the temple.  It was a good relief from the long week!

Last week we also had a District/Zone Leader Training with President Nilsen.  We are pushing hard right now for the 500 baptisms.  I believe we lie at 439.  He wanted all of us trained on the topics of leadership and faith.  It was a great meeting; I learned a lot from it!  Specifically he talked a lot on the love we need to have for the members of our district, for our members, and our investigators.  Not to mention anyone else we contact!  This is a labor of love.

From Tuesday night to Thursday Morning I had the chance to go on one last exchange with Elder Ragan!  He is the Spanish Zone Leader in East Cherry Spanish (Eastern Cincinnati area).  He is training for his last two transfers.  Elder Larson from Mesa, Arizona.  Elder Ragan is not one to get "trunky", but this assignment is definitely good prevention for that ailment!

It was fun to be with him for those couple of days.  To catch up, and learn from one another again.  The sad thing is, that we always planned on being on the same plane home, but that won't happen.

Somehow while he was at the mission office a couple of months ago flight plans were put in front of him.  He found out he would fly to Atlanta, then to SLC, while I would go to Minneapolis to SLC then St. George.  Accuse me of being trunky, but I'm bummed I won't be on the same plane, let alone be in the same airport for a layover!

Next week the mission will have it's annual Christmas Devotional.  It will be this Monday down in Liberty, Ohio.  This is were I was while I was in Miami River.  Our P-day should be moved to Tuesday.

Things are still doing good here in the Dirty Dayton.  I love you all!
Have a good week!

Feliz Cumpliaños?

From: Austin Ipson
Sent: Monday, November 26, 2012 9:17 AM

Well. It's my birthday...(Looks down at the phone) yep...  Do I feel different.  Not really...  Oh well.

This week was a good week.  The whole time we were teaching.  Last night as we reported our indicators we looked at Elder Clay's old planners.  This was one of the highest teaching weeks this area has seen in a long time!  To top it off we were able to have someone at church this week.  It was definitely a tender mercy from the Lord.

We had just left the Huber Heights Sacrament meeting, and we went to the foyer to make a couple of calls.  We decided to call Israel.  We have been teaching him for a bit, but he hadn't come to church.  Long story short, we called him, and he came!  It's was like I ordered Pizza or something!  When he walked in the Branch thought I had!  They all made an effort to come and see him.

You can tell how much life it brings to any Ward or Branch when an investigator comes to church.  People know they need to be their best selves, and not do business as usual.  It's interesting how it's our example that really sets the tone for meetings.

Oh....  I guess I should mention.... I stayed for the transfer!  Elder Clay and I will be here for my last one.  We've already taken the liberty of digging through the closet to find the "Charlie Brown Tree".  Because of the lack of ceiling lights in Ohio, we decided that the dim Christmas tree can out shine the 60W wall light in our apartment!

Things are plugging along nicely here in Dayton Sp.  We hope to give people baptismal dates soon.  Right now we are at 436 baptisms this year.  We are close to our goal of 500!

Les amo muchisimo!  Que sigan adelante esta semana!

Italian Girls

From: Austin Ipson
Sent: Monday, November 19, 2012 8:54 AM

What a way to end a week!  I've mentioned in past letters that Elder Neilson of the Quorum of the Twelve would be coming to the Dayton East Stake.  It was a spectacular experience to say the least.  He related to us the message of the Restoration.  (As found in Preach my Gospel) He then related it to the family.  He emphasized the importance of having the children in the families knowing those principles.  What a prophet is.  That Christ established a church. There was an Apostasy.  Even more importantly he emphasized the Book of Mormon, and how crucial it is that a family reads it together.  The most important thing that he touched upon was how we all are children of God!  He had all of the Primary Children stand up, and sing the 1st verse of 'I am a Child of God'.  The Spirit was even more invited into the room as the song was sung.

Elder Clay and I had the chance to shake his hand.  We got pitched off the stage as soon as we shook his hand so he could meet and greet with the Children!  We'll the kingdom of heaven is theirs....   The Seventy that accompanied Elder Neilson was Elder Smith.  He was a Senator (He didn't mention which state), and you could tell that he knew how to talk! The story he shared was while he was a Senator.

He was in his office, and his Secretary told him that he had a call.  She said it was a foreign man, and that he said that he knew Senator Smith.  The Secretary told him that she wouldn't have taken the call, but it was from Salt Lake, and that he always took interest with calls from there! Senator Smith asked who the person was, and the Secretary replied that it was Dieter Uchtdorf!  Senator Smith quickly took the call!

Elder Uchtdorf related the issue.  Italy for the longest time hadn't given The Church full recognition as a national religion.  It was difficult to build chapels, officiate as clergy in hospitals, etc.  Elder Uchtdorf asked if a meeting could be set up with someone in Italy to make an appearance.  To make a long story short, Elder Smith was able to set it up, and months later he found himself in a room with Elder Uchtdorf, and two Italians.  The first Italian was the official, and the other a professor of religion.  Elder Smith opened, and turned the time over to Elder Uchtdorf to make the appeal.  The official looked at the professor and asked, “what do you think?"

The professor said that he went to the West Coast of America for Vacation.  While he was there he stopped in Salt Lake.  As he walked around he could feel the Spirit from the temple.  The professor's reply was that he would help them, if The Church would build a temple in Italy!  Elder Uchtdorf replied, “We will begin immediately!"

The interesting thing is that this wasn't what sealed the deal. While the professor was on temple square he met two Italian girls who were there as missionaries.  He was extremely impressed how they presented themselves.  He replied to the official, "That the church would be a blessing to the Italian community.  Changing girls into great women!"

This story is an example that we need to be examples ourselves in all things and in all places.  It is true.  The greatest way to share a testimony is by example!

Oh I also found out a church secret!  Elder Neilson will be speaking at the MTC this Christmas!  As a side note:  The Grand-daughter of one of the people he was able to baptize while in the army will also be speaking!

Love you all lots!  Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!

Just another day in Paradise

These are some pics. Of my shoes. I polished them yesterday just before church so the tops look okay. (Besides the heavy wrinkles in the leather) It's the soles that are funny! I still have another pair of shoes. Just thought I'd send you pics of the most worn-out ones.

this is my tie collection. I'm not sure how many there are.. I think there are about 30+ ties. I came out with exactly 15. I have very few, of the original 15.

In Ohio I've always been told; if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes it'll change.  This is a very true concept here in the Ohio.  I've never seen weather change so quick!

Funny thing is Spanish work is dependent on the weather.  When the weather is dark and rainy, it's the best time to go out to teach.  Why?  Most of the people we work with do construction.  When it's raining its perfect time to go and teach them!  Today it's pretty rainy, so we have high hopes as we start the week tonight.  This thought reinforces what I learned growing up.... Always pray for rain!

We're still working with Jose and his family.  I don't know if I mentioned in last week's letter that he's looking for a job.  We weren't able to meet with him this week, because he was working.  We were happy for him to be out working, but it's still tough when we aren't able to teach him.

These next two weeks are fairly big weeks in the mission.  This week we'll be having Zone Conferences. Both Dayton and Dayton East Zones will be there.  The Dayton East Stake Conference is this Sunday, and Elder Nielson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will be attending.  The Huber Heights Ward is extremely excited for this!  We'll be able to attend since we also cover the Huber Heights Ward.  (The Dayton Spanish Branch falls into the Dayton Zone. Dayton Stake Conference will be in the first weeks of December)

Then the following week will be transfers.  This time the transfer will fall on Tuesday rather than a Thursday, to accommodate for Thanksgiving.  I highly doubt I'll be transferred.  I expect Elder Clay to stay here as well.  He's only been here for 4 1/2 months.  The average trend is to stay in an area for 6-7 months.  We both are expecting to stay here.

I love you, all lots. Hoping all is well back home.  Remember, pray for rain!  But not too much!

1st Frost

From: Austin Ipson
Sent: Monday, November 05, 2012 9:39 AM

We can now officially call it cold.  Last week we had our first frost.  We had some snow, but none of it stuck.  So it is 40-50ish degrees in the day.  So not too bad.  It's just when the wind kicks up we run to our little Toyota Corolla for refuge!  With Halloween there weren't very many trick-or-treaters out this week.  There are actually two days to trick-or-treat here in Dayton.  The first night is Beggars' night on the 30th and Halloween on the 31st.  Beggars' night is just to avoid all of the crazy people that run amuck!

Jose and Mercedes weren't able to come to church this week.  They had surprise doctors appointments that kept them from coming.  Mercedes had some sort of bug come up.  We were able to go over the Restoration with them.  Watched the video.  Who doesn't like movies?  Other than that Things (funny enough) are pretty calm here in the Dirty Dayton.

So Goozawits is going to the Greg Fernley this weekend! Woo!  All I can say is keep careful track of your heats. I was once 1 minute away from missing a 100 Fly!  So make sure you are always checking... Got it Goozawits?

Not much to report this week, sorry!  Things however are plugging along quite nicely!
Be sure to wash the baseboards.  I did that today!

The Dayton Draught

From: Austin Ipson
Sent: Monday, October 29, 2012 11:08 AM

Only in St. George, Ut. or if you are a Spanish Missionary are you praying for rain!  What came down from the heavens this week?  Rain!  Because of the rain Elder Clay and I were constantly in homes teaching!  How?  Most of the population that we are teaching does construction. Making it prime to go see people if it's wet outside!

We also broke through another draught.  Because of transportation and crazy work schedules it is extremely difficult to get people to church.  Here in Dayton Sp. we've been on a 2 month Draught of people not being at church.  Before that it was 5 months.  However the trend was broken yesterday when we had two investigators come with their family!

Elder Wheadon was able to wrangle an Internet referral from Salt Lake.  He and his companions (Elder Brooks, and Elder Bowler (Elder Wheadon is training in a tri-panionship as a Zone Leader)) were able to contact Jose.  The week before we had talked to Jose to see if he could come to church, but he got lost on his way to the church.  We called him up, and set up a time to go and see him before church the next week.

We show up to meet with Jose, and his wife Mercedes.  Jose tells us that his uncle is a member down in Atlanta, and the uncle had sent him a copy of the Book of Mormon.  Jose told us about the time he was living in Mexico as a boy, and he would see Missionaries walking around.  He always wondered who they were, and why they dressed the way they did!  He told us that he wanted his 15 year-old son Alexis (Alex) to be a missionary.  (They have two other daughters Kimberly and Stacey).  (Bonus points: they are already married!  No need to get papers! :D)

Our first lesson we taught the message of the Restoration.  They sat attentive as we taught.  The Spirit was there, and the message for sure made it to the heart!  No sooner had we taught about the Book of Mormon, when the questions started coming out.  "Where can I read about what happens about life after death", "What do you do in your church services?" etc.  Elder Clay and I were answering questions left and right!  Their appetite couldn't be satisfied!

They came to church this last week, and the Branch was excited to see the newcomers!  They were well received and everyone seemed to have a good time. Members are asking to come with us to our lesson this Thursday!

Things are going great so far!  Right now we are on track for 500 baptisms this year.  This will require 106 more baptisms in the months of November, and December.  We are excited!  On top of this...  In the month of November Dayton East Stake will have a Stake Conference, and Russell M. Nelson will be the Presiding authority!  Awesome things are happening here in the Ohio!

Love you all so much!  Hope you all are well!  It's true; if you were wondering.

Just kickin' it here in Dayton

A quick picture of us.....
Elder Ipson and Elder Clay

You can tell who the weird one is.....
From: Austin Ipson
Sent: Monday, October 22, 2012 9:15 AM

I can barely believe that I am back here again!  Mondays seem to come really fast now days!

Elder Clay and I have hit the pavement!  There's no other way to put it!  We've been knocking doors, street contacting, asking for referrals etc.  Dayton Spanish is actually Bilingual.  I'm not sure if I mentioned that in the last letter.  So it doesn't matter who we talk to!  We can spread the Gospel on all fronts!  If you are curious we do go to English Sacrament meetings with the Huber Heights Ward.  The funny thing is... There was actually a Bishop Ipson at the Huber Heights Ward, and they ask if I'm related to him!

So our door approaches usually start out with teaching some sort of Principle on the doorstep while introducing who we are.  If it's English and they are interested, we can step in and teach them a normal lesson, and plan on going back.  In other areas we would of had to figure out which area they fall in.  Tell the person that it won't be us that comes back.  Being bilingual has its perks!  However if they aren't interested, we quickly ask if there are any Spanish Speakers on the street, and quickly they'll step out and talk!  It usually we get pointed to at least one Spanish Speaker.  If you want to put your google earth to work...  We are doing a bit of work right now on Xenia Ave. here in Dayton.  If it looks a little desolate for your taste, take a quick tour of the West side!  You'll go right back to Xenia ave!

It's funny Elder Wheadon is my Zone Leader here!  He is in Englewood.  It has been great having him be a zone leader for us.  Why?  He gets us Spanish Referrals!  One of his referrals (that we haven't met) almost came to church this past week.  We were a little bummed that Jose' (The referral) didn't come.  It's been a while since the Branch has seen an investigator at church.

Elder Thomas Clay is doing well.  He is doing a great job leading the area.  Elder Homewood has an extremely focused attitude when it comes to missionary work.  It's funny to see how he's picked up a few mannerisms from him!  I think it's funnier to tell Elder Clay stories about Elder Homewood from when we were down in Kentucky!  The curses of being a Spanish Missionary!  There's only 20 of us, so we know each-other fairly well!

Love you all!  Hope you all had a good time in San Diego.  Don't forget to clean behind your ears!

Para Siempre,
Elder Ipson

Well, I was caught off guard on what happened last Thursday.  I had a good idea that I was going to be transferred from Pickerington 2nd.  I just felt like I did the work I needed to.  It was an odd feeling, but I had it even before I received the call to go.

How it worked out last week, I was called to be a substitute District leader!  The actual district leader was leaving the mission field, and was at the Mission home for his departing interview with President Nilsen.  I was called upon to give district meeting. It was then I decided I didn't want to be one!  With that decision made, what happens?  I get a call from President Nilsen.  What does he ask me to do?  Be a District Leader! Eesh....

In a time just after District Meeting and the call from President Nilsen, I got a call from the Zone Leaders.  I was told that I was..... Going! Elder Smith and I went out, and tried to see a few people.  I found myself packing the rest of the night.  Getting to transfer meeting, you could tell that something big was going to happen.  We were getting 16 new missionaries, and only 4 were leaving!  Elder Ragan will be training this transfer.  He was really happy to get that call!

I don't know if I've described how the transfer meeting works out here.... Here it goes...In the chapel there are three sections.  Missionaries that are leaving will sit on the Speaker's right.  Staying Missionaries will be on the Speakers left.  When they call the transfer staying missionaries will be announced.  The missionary stands up, and walks in front of the pulpit, as the moving missionary is called and makes his way to the front.  The missionaries give a hug, and sit down in the center section.  So this is roughly what happened.

"In Dayton Spanish; Elder Clay: Junior Companion, (Elder Clay is getting up and walking) will receive a new district leader named Elder Ipson. At this point I'm shocked.  In my mind I'm wondering... Did Elder McClellan really just say Dayton Spanish?  I scrambled up there and the just as surprised Elder Clay!

Both of us sat there dumbfounded.  I didn't expect to go back to Spanish work.  Elder Clay expect to receive Elder Garner, However he went to English work down in Kentucky. Neither of us expected this to happen!  The funny thing is the rest of the Spanish Elders were shocked, because I'm one of the first to come back!

Elder Clay was trained by Elder Homewood.  If you remember my days in Kentucky, I was in the same district as him.  Elder Clay went to Pleasant Grove, UT.  He's been out for two transfers now.  I will be his "greenie-breaker".  He's already doing a great job of leading the area, and helping get up to date with the things that are going on in the District.

The Branch here is extremely small.  I'd say it's smaller than the Branch in Kentucky, but doesn't change my purpose!  Our President here is Presidente Vilches.  He is originally from Chile.  He is very, very, short, but he's still got a full personality!  The work is going well here in the Dirty Dayton.  Elder Homewood and Elder Clay have worked really hard to get people to teach.  Even this week I was able to find a few people to tech with Elder Clay!

As you can probably tell, I'm excited to go and work!  Love you all! Have a great week! Don't forget to clean the Kennel.

What a weekend!

The world I'm sure is still in shock about the announcement made by President Monson.  The moment he stood at the pulpit, you could tell in his demeanour that there was a big announcement to be made!  And it was!  I'm excited for all who are taking to this call to serve, and will tell you that it is worth it!  This time to serve has been one of the greatest times of my life!

Transfer week is upon us.  I can barely believe that it's here!  Time flies.  Anywho... Mom I apologize for not telling you more about Elder Smith.  I don't remember what I have told you...  Anywho, he is a California kid.  Essentially he is a beach bum!  (Body boarder).  While his Dad lives in Laguna Niguel, C; His mom lives in Chandler, AZ.  His first name is Keaton.  It was funny.  His first day here; we ate with Brother Parsons and his son Keaton.  We all found it funny, because it isn't too common of a name!  He's been out for about 9 months, and is chugging along.

As for me... Conference was great!  It seemed so many of the discourses given, had direct application to me!  It was kind-of scary!  Dad once told me how this the case for him.  I didn't believe it was possible until now!  I've thought a bit about what was said by Elder Bednar, on conversion.  It may have to do with the fact he was one of the last talks....  However it made me wonder...  Do I simply have a testimony, or have I built a lofty conversion?  It has been some heavy food for thought.

I apologize for the shortness of the letter.  All I can remember is Conference.  The rest of the week was rather quiet...  However, I know the Lord will provide if we press on!

I also thank you all for the prayers that are given to me.  They are felt.  There is no doubt about it.  I know the Lord supports each and every one of us.  In the scriptures it says "The Lord is no respecter of persons".  How this translates to me... He loves each and everyone of us equally!  I love you all very much.  Keep the faith!

I don't know what to put for the Subject line....

From: Austin Ipson
Sent: Monday, October 01, 2012 9:28 AM

This past week we were able to pick up!  You can always tell, when you are finding new investigators!  The two that we were able to teach came from good ol' tracting!  Josh, and later Tom.  For both of them it was a quick lesson on the Restoration, and teaching about the Spirit.  We'll have return appointments this week.

So to the really good stuff....
The week before we met a guy by the name of Roger.  Why is Roger cool?  He makes knives!  already I can tell Mom is wondering what is about to happen.  Rest assured.  I still have my limbs!  I will give you the dialogue of when we found him.

(At doorstep)
Roger: So what are ya'll sellin'?
Us: We're not selling anything.
Roger: Oh, you're trying to get me to go to church!
Us: Well you could say that!
Roger: Well you're not going to convert me.  Come on in!

So he invites us in and shows us his collection of knives.  He invited us over last P-day to come make knives!  Coolest door contact ever, right? He never really seemed interested, but he did at the same time.  He doesn't like to show it.   Yesterday we dropped by to see if it was okay if we finish my knife today.  Funny thing was he finished it for me, and he asked for a Book of Mormon! All-in-all I feel like we got the better end of the deal!  I'll see if I can get a picture with this crazy old guy, and the funny looking hunk of metal that's now in my suit-case!

Last week I mentioned Dr. G.  How she is being introduced to the church through Sister Clyde.  Well she came again this week!  Dr. G had plans to go to the Relief Society Broadcast but was unable to.  She was disappointed she wasn't able to go, especially when Sisters were bearing testimony of it during the Fast and Testimony Meeting.  She was enthralled when she found it she could watch it online!

The cool thing about this whole situation.  We are watching members do a ton of work.  We haven't formally taught her, or counted as a new investigator.  However, things are lining up for a lasting conversion!  She has been given a Book of Mormon, and is already reading it.  (Sister Clyde gave it to her, with her testimony on the inside).  She has felt the Spirit and is already testifying to co-workers what she has felt at sacrament meetings.  She'll be heading off for vacation this week, but down the road Sister Clyde has a tentative meeting set up with us.  We are very excited!  This is missionary work at it's best!

Scary thing is, transfers are next week!  I may not be here. Going with trends I'll stay here 'till the end... But you never know!  So this coming transfer meeting will fall on a Wednesday.  So if I do go, I won't receive the letter.  Just plan on sending it to the P.O. Box.

I love you all!  Can't believe it's General Conference and marathon weekend again!  Have a good week!

Here's the side that Mom won't get.

There comes a point in every person's life where he realizes the material things in life, just don't matter.  I figure at least one of the "parental units" should know what happened to me this week.  If you feel like you should tell Mom.  Go ahead.  I just don't want her flipping out when she reads the e-mail for this week.

Now you joke about Elder Smith and I being big guys, and nobody wanting to mess with us because of our size.  Well someone did.

We were finishing out the night.  Trying just a couple more people before we headed in.  It was around 8 o'clock.  Not too late, but it was dark.  Elder Smith and I rounded into a side street.  I was in the lead & realized that I had taken a wrong turn.  I was slowing down to tell Elder Smith we were about to turn around.  At that same time what looked to be a 90's Buick pulls up.  A Black kid around my age gets out of the car yelling all different forms of the f-bomb.  What do see in his hand? A small revolver. I knew exactly where this was going.  To cut to the chase, He let me know that he had a gun, and I forked over $25.  Elder Smith came out just fine.  They dismissed us from the scene, and I didn't have a chance to grab a plate number or anything.  Of course we were shaking the rest of the night.  We just had guns pulled on us, but, we were happy is was only a matter of $25.

It all seemed to be a matter of circumstance.  Wrong place, wrong time.  What I learned?  Really be careful.  This area that I was in, isn't the worst area I've been in at night.  Hamilton, OH & Covington, KY easily take the cake.  So that .40 that you bought, make sure you have it on your person when you are out of town.  There are crazy people out there!

There you go.  We are still doing fine here. You'll get the better side of the week when I send the big e-mail.

Oh, & thanks for the tubes!  If those don't last me.... I don't know what will!

Well. It took 'till the 89th minute, but the Crew finally put it in!  It was fun seeing the members at the game.  One of the pictures posted is of me and Cristhian Pantaleon.  He is a member from Kentucky that came up with his family to see the game.  Right now he is preparing to go on a mission.  The funny thing was..  He was our Branch Mission leader in Kentucky!

I also go to see the Lucero family again.  Horacio made sure to razz me!  Right now the are making a change.  They are moving from the Franklin 1 Branch to the Dublin Ward.  They hope to find more support for Brian, and Nathan.  Horacio also has a few more friends that are in the Dublin Ward.  They also have Spanish Translation there.  So it should be good for them!

We had another rough week.  We worked pretty dang hard, but numerically it didn't show.  However we did see a miracle on Sunday!

While I was with Elder Welch we were eating chicken feet, and we were working with Sister Clyde, because she was trying to introduce one of her friends to the Gospel.  Dr. G: the Clydes kids' Dentist was the one (She's goes by Dr. G because it's hard for kids to pronounce her name why?  She's of Philippine decent).  We armed her with Pamphlets and what-not, but it wasn't needed.  Why?  The Primary Program was coming up!  So at their last visit Sister Clyde invited Dr. G to come to the Primary Program!  The interesting thing is that she lives by two other families in the Ward.  One of those families helped inviting Dr G. again!

We get to church, and sitting with the Clydes is Dr. G!  The whole time she seemed to enjoy herself.  She stayed for the whole block.   The theme of the Primary Program was "Choose the Right".  Quite a bit of it had to do with Church standards and how we follow them.

We got home.  Went to work, but ended up having a flat tire.  We came home discouraged, but still happy about what happened at church.  Our excitement was elevated after a call we got from Sister Clyde!  She told us that Dr. G sent her an email later in the day.  Thanking her for inviting her to come to church.  She also said that she was going through a hard time, and the theme of the Primary Program was exactly what she needed to hear, and she was holding back tears the whole time she was there!  Sister Clyde was shocked!  We gave her a Book of Mormon to her to hand off.  She will see her on Thursday, and will give her a Book of Mormon, and invite her to hear the missionaries!

We also had interviews last week.  The day after the Crew game.  It's been rocky for me these past couple of transfers.  There's been the desire to go and do, but it just didn't happen.  President Nilsen pointed out the Story of the Brother of Jared.  How he brought for the stones, and he had the faith that the Lord would touch them. Later he had the faith that the Lord would reveal himself.  I've learned it's not just going and doing, but knowing the Lord will provide as I go and do.  That little addition makes all the difference!

Love you all!  T you little rascal!  What are you doing being Homecoming royalty?  Dawg!

Look at all of the missionaries waiting to get in the gate.  It was "Mormon Night" and "Hispanic Heritage Night".  Sister Angie Lucero took these photos on her iphone and posted them to Facebook...bless her heart!

Enjoying the Crew game!

Elder Smith and Elder Ipson
This e-mail is coming a bit late to you today.  Due to the Columbus Crew game we shifted our normal Monday P-day to Wednesday.  This was a spur of the moment deal.  We didn't find out about it until Saturday, so I couldn't have let you know sooner... Sorry!

Tonight however we are going to the Crew game!  We are all pretty excited for it!  We are still hearing rumors that we are singing, or doing something.  This is still yet to be confirmed.  All we know is that we'll be on the field for the "pre-game" stuff, or as President Nilsen said, “during warm-ups".  What this will entail I have no idea.  I'll fill you in on what happens, but as for now there isn't too much info.

These past couple days the temperature has dropped significantly!  Long-sleeves are being busted out!  This always seems to be my favorite time of the year.  Already some of the leaves are beginning to turn red!  This winter coming up is forecasted to be a lot colder than the last.  So I get have a real Ohio winter before I know it!  As for right now it's been really nice for biking.

We've been out finding.  Our investigators are hard to keep in touch with.  They all seem to have so many things going on; it's almost impossible to keep up with them!

Yesterday we had a mission wide fast to help accomplish our goals for the rest of the year.  I don't know if I have stated them...  This September we hope to accomplish 40 baptisms as a mission.  October through December we hope to have 50 in each month.  This would put us on track to have more than our goal of 500 baptisms!  We (as a mission) put a lot of effort in during the month of August, almost depleting our investigator pools.  This fast is to get things back on track so that we can continue to have success.

Elder Smith and I saw fruits from the fast already!

We've been trying to coordinate a visit from the Stake President (President Meldrum) and President Nilsen.  Sister Leonard has been a bit dodgy when it comes to church.  We invited her to listen to these Priesthood leaders, but our invitation wasn't warmly accepted.  We figured that nothing was going to come from it... However Sister Barclay (Good friend to Sister Leonard) got a call from her, saying that she'd be willing to have the visit from the Leaders!  All of this are enthralled!  This was an immediate fruit of the fast!

While on the phone coordinating the visit, we made a stop at a UDF. (United Dairy Farmers (Gas Station with Ice Cream)).  Hey there is cell service there! As we were on our way out one of the Cashiers commented that we look like the FBI.  We laughed because we get that comment quite a bit! She told us that long ago she had a Book of Mormon, but would like another.  We gave her another, and had a good talk about prophets and their role.  How it worked out: we came back later for some ice cream, and she had read from the Pamphlet we had also given her!  The one thing I love about missionary work is teaching those who are willing to learn.  That is the greatest part of the work!

All is well here in the Ohio.  It's getting cold, but I'll survive! Lots of love!

It's getting dark out here!

Elder Ragan, ?, ?, Elder Jacobson & Elder Ipson

The nights are coming quicker!  I have to turn the headlight on my bike now!

This past week was a tough one.  Elder Smith and I did quite a bit of work.  Going to return appointments, tracting, setting up lessons for members to come.  It just didn't seem to work out this week.  We kept grinding it out this past week, but we couldn't get any immediate results.  However, the miracle came last night after we reported our indicators.  We got a referral from Elder Garner (He's now is Spanish North: Westerville area).  He gave us a referral from the Hernandez family (remember Henry?  The Dominican guy I can't understand?)  They got this referral but don’t have the means of getting down here to Pickerington.  The referral was handed off to us in hopes that we can make contact with her.  (Her name is Mindy)  We also received a referral from the Pickerington 1 Elders.  We will be making an exchange tomorrow to go and teach this family.  These two referrals were little tender mercies at the end of this week.

As we went out to go find new people to teach, there's always those few who are ignorant to the truth, but arrogant to learn it.  It heard saved by grace, and the crazy theories of Yah-way (spelling?).  In the situation my eyes roll.  "Why won't you listen to me?"  My heart yells, as contention drives the conversation.  Then when I sit down to study my heart mourns, "Why won't they listen to me?"  I am extremely grateful we have the guiding influence of the Holy Ghost in our lives.  Not only does it warn us of danger ahead, but it teaches us of eternal truth.  By the Holy Ghost truth, is branded to our hearts.  It is not a fleeting thought or idea, but an eternal principle.  This is been present as I've read the scriptures this week.  An item that has been on my mind lately is the Godhead.  The divinity of each of its members.  I'm grateful I am taught by the Spirit.  One of the members of that same Godhead.  Who better to teach me about the Savior, than a member of the Godhead!  As Moroni teaches in his promise (Moroni 10:3-5) we are to read, ponder, and pray. By the power of the Holy Ghost we know all things.  It is as we do those things we put ourselves in that eternal classroom.  I know that to be true.  The Spirit testifies of Christ:  His divinity.  He testifies of the Father: His work and his Glory!

I love you all so much and hope you all have a great week!

Tres burros?

Alright... Now I have to remember what happened last week... Ben and Amber weren't able to meet with us this week.  They were down in the Athens area for a wedding...  We will have the scoop for you all next week!

In weeks past I believe I mentioned to you a couple by the name of Kristal, and Deven.  Kristal is a less-active that is coming back, and Deven is the boyfriend that is not a member.  We had lost contact with them for a couple of weeks.  We tried quite a few times to contact them.  Stopping by, texting, calling, etc.  But there wasn't any luck.  We just happened to be in the area, and decided to give it a knock.  To our amazement Deven answered the door, and asked us to come back the next day!

We waddled back and shared with him the plan of salvation.  He understood it for the most-part, but he has a few questions.  Second coming questions, the good ol' “you shall not add or take away from this book" doubt.  We set up another appointment for the next day.

We were able to resolve the doubts and questions.  We taught him lesson three from Preach my Gospel.  The Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Our lesson was at the Chapel, and we were able to show him the baptismal font.  We extended to him the 22nd of September.  He said he'd work towards it!

He came to church the next day.  Kristal told us that he is planning on reading all of the Book of Mormon before the 22nd!  So, there are two things we need to make happen before then... A testimony of the Book of Mormon, and a marriage.  I know that if Deven is willing to follow the Lord things will work out.  I really believe his heart is in the right place.

Zone Conference was great!  I was able to see quite a few of my old companions there.  Elder Ragan, Jacobson, & Garner.  Elder Garner is now training in Spanish North.  The Westerville area.

We focused ourselves on the Primitive church of Christ, and the Apostasy.  Why there was such a need for a Restoration.  I've seen this as I've studied.

My goal is to finish the all of canonized (inspired) scripture before my release.  I'm chugging through the Old Testament, New Testament, & Book of Mormon.  Time after time I see the pattern of how God calls man to be his prophet and guide his covenant people.  The more and more I read, more and more I can testify that this is the Church of Christ, and we are now in the Fullness of times!

I love you all, don't do anything dumb, read your scriptures, clean the kennel, and brush your teeth.

Bluebird

From: Austin Ipson
Sent: Monday, August 20, 2012 9:28 AM

This morning we left the apartment and worked out.  What did we see while we were out?  A school bus!  School is in session here in the Columbus area.  It's funny depending on what side of Gender Rd. you are on you can be in three different school districts.  Columbus, Canal Winchester, or Pickerington. Boundaries here are crazy!  People will carefully pick their homes to make sure they get the 2 of the better school districts.

This past week one of our 'coming back members' dropped smoking. Brother Hansen is a seasoned man.  Around 55 years old.  He is an aircraft mechanic for American Eagle Airlines.  If you wonder how we get to and from the Library on Mondays.  He's our man!  He also gives us rides to and from church.  Like I said he has committed to keep more fully the Word of Wisdom.  Last Friday he finished off his last pack and made the commitment to stop.  He's been doing well thus far, he still needs support.  If you could pray for Brother Hansen that would be great!

Ben came to church once again!  We are excited for him.  We just wish that his wife would join him.  She still can't fathom the fact that in the Mormon Church it's okay if you have a screaming baby!  Ben, he's keeping the commitment of coming to church, but he's still apprehensive about praying to know.  This is something we take happily!  That God answers prayers.  Over time we have learned that it's more than just a feeling you get...  If we are just to say it's a feeling you get, the answer to your prayer could have been heart-burn!  As a community of Church goers we have a general idea of how the Spirit works.

Ben recognizes that.  His true concern is that he doesn't want to be deceived.  He showed us a scripture in Corinthians that the devil can appear to us as angels of light (roughly).  With that in mind it begs the question.  Is it heartburn, or the Spirit?

We brought a member with us; Brother Bawden. (He went to Dixie College, yep he was a Rebel!)  He explained it like the 'gut-feeling' you can get.  He explained it very well.  We hope that Ben can get it.  Right now what Ben needs is to pour over the Book of Mormon.  He's read parts, but hasn't given himself into reading it.  So, if you could, I'd like to ask you to pray for Ben and Amber.  For both of them to have a desire to read the Book of Mormon, and have a desire to know of its truthfulness.

We will keep working!  We have Zone Conference tomorrow with President Nilsen, and Transfers are next Thursday!  Exciting stuff happening here in The Great OCM!

Love you all!  Don't sleep in too late T!
